Fried Applesauce Pie

Fried Applesauce Pies

Prep time: 20 minutes Chill time: 1 hour Cook Time: 15 minutes
Servings: 12 Pies

Crust

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups shortening
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • Canola oil for frying
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for sprinkling on top when done)

Filling

  • 6 Gala apples (peeled and sliced)
  • 1/3 cup sugar (to taste, you apples may be tarter or sweeter)
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  1. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in the shortening into the flour mixture until about pea size. Add in the eggs and milk and knead until it becomes a dough. Place in refrigerator for an hour.

  3. Roll dough out into a round about the size of a saucer. Place filling on one half of the circle of dough. Wet the circle on the outer edges with your finger. Fold in half and seal the edges with a fork. Fry in about 3 inches of canola oil until golden brown, flip while cooking.* Put on a rack to cool. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve.
* You can make them ahead and either freeze them or keep them in the refrigerator for a couple days. Fry them off when you are ready to serve or if you fry them ahead of time put them in a 350 degree preheated oven for 10 minutes right before you are ready to serve them.
